Do You Have The Guts?

Season 2: Sneaky Perfectionism

Thank you for tuning in to Do You Have The Guts!

The concept we're discussing today is powerful. It’s from the book The Gap & The Gain by Dr. Benjamin Hardy, Organization Psychologist and Dan Sullivan, Life Coach. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This was one of my summer reads and it is impactful, and something I’ve even shared with my kiddo...really anyone who will listen. The concept is powerful because it shifts how we see progress. It is the easiest formula to imbibe. It is free and easy.

It’s is an idea built around measuring our successes from a specific starting point. This method is all about progress and studying our progress and it makes for the biggest aha moment after aha moment in so many facets of life.

Instead of measuring success against an ideal (perfection), we should measure success from where we began.

Perfection is always sneaking into my life. I often catch it in a new and improved form like how I’m measuring success. Sneaky perfectionism is the inner critic that says you will never get there, you will never measure up…

Are you trying to lose weight? How are you measuring your success? How you view success is critical to feeling progress. What are you considering or ‘looking at’ when you measure your weight loss success? Are you comparing only to where you think you should be, or are you comparing to where you were 1 week ago, or 2 weeks ago? This is a measuring point where we are gaining momentum each week vs never living up to how we think we should look, or even how we want to look! Measuring your success from starting point creates wins.

Stop comparing yourself to an unreachable ideal and embrace your progress, and let go of the cycle of comparison.

Easy Ways to Implement The Gap & The Gain Concept:

  1. Weekly Reflection: At the end of each week, look back at what went well and celebrate even the smallest successes. According to Dr. Benjamin Hardy, measuring these successes at the end of each day or week offers a feeling & viewpoint of progress.

  2. Question Your Feelings: When you feel like a failure, ask yourself if you're comparing yourself to an ideal or an outcome in the future? Don't measure against the sneakily perfect ideal or even the future; measure your progress against how far you've come. Every time.

  3. Share and Teach: Share this concept with others to reinforce its importance and help them break free from the comparison trap.

  4. Daily Journaling: Dr. Benjamin Hardy suggests a simple journaling practice—write down three things you did well that day before bedtime. It boosts self-esteem and helps with sleep.
